Coming next month! ......... "A Brit’s Take on the World"
Simon and Susan Veness are known as Britain's foremost experts on the Orlando holiday experience through their guidebooks and other writing, but they also live and work just five minutes from Walt Disney World, and are still frequently either amazed, annoyed, charmed or just plain confused by all that goes on around them!
Starting next month, The DIBB Newsletter will bring you a regular column of some of their more offbeat writing and musings on the great Disney experience and all that it entails. Get ready to be amused, informed and (hopefully!) entertained by their take on living and working 'in the heart of the Magic.'

From Dinos to Rhinos, Chills to Thrills
Disney's Animal Kngdom
Conquer a forbidden mountain guarded by a mysterious yeti. Travel back in time -- way back -- to a world of ferocious dinosaurs. Surround yourself with the music and magic of a Broadway-caliber performance in the "Festival of the Lion King" show. Hop aboard a real safari and explore the wilds of Africa. Ride raging rapids through a threatened rainforest, or marvel at tigers, fruit bats and other creatures amid the ruins of an ancient Asian village.
Lace up your walking shoes and prepare to explore Disney's Animal Kingdom, where the exciting worlds of wild and whimsical creatures come to life on a thrill ride through the Himalayan landscape, on an authentic African safari, in theaters brimming with colorful entertainment and through up-close meetings with the animal stars of Disney feature animation classics.
Expedition Everest, featuring screaming coaster thrills up, down and through a towering mountain full of amazing effects, is the latest adventure awaiting guests at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Laid out in a classic hub-and-spoke Disney style, this newest and fourth major theme park at Walt Disney World Resort first welcomes guests into The Oasis, a lush gateway to adventure populated by deer, anteaters, tree kangaroos and other animals. The park's fun-filled lands radiate from the centrally located Discovery Island, where The Tree of Life park icon towers 145 feet above guests and houses the hilarious 3-D film and special effects attraction, "It's Tough to be a Bug!" From there, guests can explore:
- Asia, featuring the new Expedition Everest, a white-knuckle adventure into the unknown world of a mystical yeti; Kali River Rapids, a white-water raft adventure; Maharajah Jungle Trek with tigers, gibbons, Komodo dragons and other creatures; and "Flights of Wonder," an exotic bird show.
- Africa, home to Kilimanjaro Safaris, Harambe village, Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, and Rafiki's Planet Watch and the Wildlife Express steam train.
- DinoLand U.S.A., with Chester & Hester's Dino-Rama! "mini-land" featuring Primeval Whirl and TriceraTop Spin, the DINOSAUR thrill ride, The Boneyard excavation play area and Cretaceous Trail.
- Camp Minnie-Mickey, with the "Festival of the Lion King" stage show, Pocahontas in the "Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends" stage show, and Disney character meet-and-greet pavilions featuring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and other favorites.
"Nothing like Animal Kingdom exists anywhere else in the world," says Joe Rohde, Walt Disney Imagineering executive designer for the park. "Our guests journey into the last wild sanctuaries of the planet -- vast forests and grasslands where the great herds of Africa surround them. And they race against time into the darkness of a prehistoric world where gigantic dinosaurs literally shake the earth around them."
A mountain range is peaking in Asia as Expedition Everest rises above the tree tops. Explorers encounter surprises aboard a runaway train adventure that combines coaster thrills with an encounter of the hairy kind. The story of yeti as protector of the sacred mountain is told throughout the mythical village rich with Himalayan culture and tradition.
Kali River Rapids is a white-water rafting expedition in the land of Asia. Guests are launched on 12-person rafts into the turbulent Chakranadi River for a wet journey of twists, turns and fiery adventure. A surprise awaits around every turn, including an abrupt drop into racing, splashing waters.
Asia's other main attraction, Maharajah Jungle Trek, is a breathtaking journey through the lush home of myriad animal and bird species.
In this rainforest environment, Nepal, India, Thailand and Indonesia all are represented through architecture, animal carvings and ruins scattered throughout the village. The exotic animals are visible from the top of a parapet, through a stand of bamboo and from a bridge that stands amid the ruins near an old herb garden.
"Flights of Wonder," a humorous show highlighting the beauty and diversity of birds at Caravan Stage outdoor amphitheater, is also a part of Asia. The setting for "Flights of Wonder" is a crumbling Asian town where macaws, ibis, pelicans and other birds emerge from their alcoves to soar overhead.
Which birds show off on any given day is part of the surprise, but all birds are being taught to show off their natural talent, not "do tricks." Trainers demonstrate how birds respond to special audio or visual clues, how they hunt and eat. "Flights of Wonder" is one of many shows and demonstrations in Disney's Animal Kingdom designed to entertain while inspiring guests to a greater awareness of animals and what threatens them around the world.
Bugs are another matter. They may not shake the earth, but they know how to shake up an audience in "It's Tough to be a Bug!" at The Tree of Life Theater. With advanced 3-D and Audio-Animatronics technology combined with surprising special effects, this insect adventure leaves guests laughing and screaming for more.
The magical music of the Disney classic "The Lion King" combines with dance, acrobatics and elaborate staging and costuming to inspire one of the theme park's most talked-about shows, "Festival of the Lion King" at Camp Minnie-Mickey.
At the heart of DinoLand U.S.A., guests discover DINOSAUR, where they board time-traveling vehicles to zoom back 65 million years on a twisting, lurching journey to save the last dinosaur from extinction before the crash of a fiery asteroid. A busy paleontological "dig," The Boneyard, provides plenty of fun activity for children as they climb, crawl and slide throughout the well-preserved skeletons of triceratops and Tyrannosaurus rex. Chester & Hester's Dino-Rama! captures the essence of a campy roadside fair. Guests can take a spin on Primeval Whirl, a fun-filled family coaster, or TriceraTop Spin, a playful open-air, toy-top attraction. Old-fashioned amusement games round out the fun.
From the thrilling era of the dinosaurs more than 65 million years ago, Disney guests can travel on to an African savannah of today, where rare and wonderful creatures such as black rhinos, hippos, African elephants and lions roam openly. On Kilimanjaro Safaris, passengers experience a true African safari in vehicles that bounce over rutted roads, ford through pools of hippos and pass herds of zebra, giraffe, gazelle, elephants and other animals.
At the end of the 20-minute safari, visitors can follow Pangani Forest Exploration Trail into an Eden-like world of streams and splashing waterfalls. Pangani Forest is home to a troop of endangered lowland gorillas. Hippos -- viewed from under water -- meerkats and tropical birds live along the shady walking trail.
For an up-close look at more of the real animals inhabiting Disney's Animal Kingdom, guests can board the Wildlife Express steam train to Rafiki's Planet Watch. An interactive backstage look at how the park's animals are kept happy and healthy, Rafiki's Planet Watch features: Animal Cam, with a peek into animal care areas; hands-on displays for the opportunity to participate in conservation and species-survival efforts; and The Affection Section, where guests can meet and pet small domestic animals such as goats and sheep. A wondrous audio experience transports guests into a threatened rainforest.
Animals have played an important part in Disney stories from the earliest Mickey Mouse films to the "True-Life Adventures" television series in the 1950s to "The Lion King" in feature motion pictures.
"Disney is all about storytelling," says Rohde. "And now, for the first time, real live animals help tell the story as their fascinating families play out real-life experiences on nature's 'stage.' "

Celebrating your childs Birthday at Disney Parks...
If one of your party has a birthday whilst visiting one of Disney's themeparks then why not make it extra special for them.
If you are staying on Disney property then before you arrive or when you check in, let the checkin staff know about the birthday. Usually you will receive a birthday character greeting over the room telephone... a magical way to start the day.
Once you enter a park, call in at Guest Services (City hall for Magic Kingdom) and tell them you are celebrating a birthday, you will receive a birthday badge with their name on it. Wear the badge around the park and the CM's will greet them by name. The characters will also interact and write special messages in their autograph books too...
If you are dining at a table service restaurant then you can order a special birthday cake or greeting at the podium, there is a charge for this. You can also order a custom cake if you call 48 hours in advance.
Be sure to check out all the restaurants as some do special surprises, for example, at the Coral Reef restaurant they have scuba divers that swim down and display birthday greetings.

Norway Pavillion to lose Viking Ship
The Viking ship playground at the Norway pavilion is soon to be demolished. It was originally a children’s playground but since it was renovated in 2006 it has been just a photo opportunity. The ship is now showing signs of rotting away so permission to demolish it has now been approved.

- 4 litres of still table wine
- 16 litres of beer
- 1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22 per cent volume; or 2 litres of fortified wine (such as port or sherry), sparkling wine or other alcoholic beverages of less than 22 per cent volume and

If you have any more than these allowances you must declare the goods in the red channel or use the red point phone. If you do not, you are breaking the law and we may prosecute you.

"They've got a Golden Ticket!"
Fireworks, lights, lasers, music and a special award light up IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth at Epcot®
Every night, thousands of people hush with awed anticipation as the lights dim over a glistening lagoon nestled among 11 great nations. Within moments, the air swirls with music. The nations glow. Fountains strive for their fullest heights. The skies fill with over 1,100 pyrotechnics and lasers that seem to reach into infinity. Soon, a huge spherical "Earth Globe" reveals the wonders of the seven continents on curved LED screens—a window to the cultures of the world, becoming the centerpiece of the surrounding splendor.
That's just part of the glorious IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth. This gigantic presentation is one of the most acclaimed by Epcot® Guests and Cast Members alike. Even renowned celebrities set aside time from their live Epcot® performances throughout the year to behold the spectacle.
"I'd like to thank the academy…"
It should come as no surprise that IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth is the recipient of the 2008 Golden Ticket Award for Best Outdoor Night Show Production. These prestigious awards are presented in 25 categories to the "Best of the Best" in the amusement industry calculated from an international poll conducted by Amusement Today.
The dedicated, creative artists behind the scenes of the big show, like Walt Disney Creative Entertainment Managing Producer John Haupt, are very humble about the honor. It's just part of what they love to do: making magic for Walt Disney World® Guests.
Coming up with a "kiss goodnight"
A 32-year Disney veteran, John's been involved with the evolution of every World Showcase Lagoon show since they began 18 years ago, when he and his collaborators came up with "Carnival de Lumiere," the first World Showcase Lagoon "kiss goodnight" (that's Disneyspeak for an event that caps off a Guest's day of Disney Park fun in a memorable way).
"The biggest issue was how we could possibly put a show on the lagoon that could be enjoyed 360° around it," John explained. "The first show had four large projection screens that floated in on barges with images timed to music, framed by a proscenium arch with curlicue designs.
"That version ran for a few years, but it couldn't be seen around the whole Lagoon. Soon we had the technology to take it further in a show called 'Laserphonic Fantasy.' Lasers were still a fairly new visual thing then, so we combined that with fireworks."
A new kind of show is born
Each new version led the creative team to more possibilities. "We spent about two years developing what became the first version of IllumiNations, set to famous music of each country. Now we had searchlights and rim lights around the nations and an enormous amount of fireworks. That was extremely successful. We got a lot of press and became one of those things folks told each other they HAD to see on their vacations."
Other versions followed, but the extravaganza reached a new dimension in magnificence with IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth. "All we had done, all we had learned, everything came together with that show," said John. "And most of all, we had an original musical score that not only tied all the elements together, it also could not fail to affect everyone's emotions."
For the music, the Oscar®–winning composer Hans Zimmer recommended the Disney team work with Gavin Greenaway, who with Don Dorsey came up with the stirring music that thrills Guests today. It was recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road recording studios—John and his friends even walked along the same crosswalk immortalized on the iconic 1960s album cover that bore the studio's name.
Music becomes the crowning touch
"The first time I heard that music, it immediately grabbed me," John said. "That's very tough for an original score to do. To this day, it's still as strong as the day when the show opened with its dynamism." Greenaway so impressed the Disney staff, he was asked to do a number of other scores.
John and the team programmed IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth to be fully automated. Once the first cue begins, various elements of the show are checked to be sure they're all in synchronization. Then over 30 different computer systems take over, controlling the Park lighting, fireworks, lasers, barges, video and more in a huge interconnected network. As John said with a chuckle, "It's a lot more than just tossing a bunch of fireworks, lasers and stuff into the air!"
But it still takes skilled people to make sure each Guest gets a thoroughly entertaining experience. "One of the things we do is walk the entire promenade to see what people see and adjust the show based on what we can or cannot see. We want everybody to see as good a show as they possibly can from any vantage point around the World Showcase Lagoon.
"It means a lot to us. We've put everything we know into IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth to create something that will touch people and they'll never forget."
The New parade "Celebrate Dreams Come True parade" at MK will begin January 23rd.
Minnie will now be on Mickey's float. Pinocchio and Jiminy will be together and Snow White and Dopey. The other dwarfs are going away. There will be 3 show stops for this parade. The characters will all stay on the floats and there will be 30 couples dancing on the street. There will be about 6 different sections with lots of rainbow designs.
